One thing’s for sure: the game has the potential to be a speedrunner’s paradise, considering how relevant skill is to simple progression. I guess you can still consider it a puzzle, but it’s very tactile and intuitive, so it seems to contain elements of action as well. I can I’m sure many people will appreciate the opportunity to challenge themselves to get faster and faster at this. It’s certainly slow, and requires careful planning of every movement, but it feels grounded, challenging, and fun, and I can definitely see its potential to become very fast and “second nature” over time. Still, it clicked as soon as I started climbing the rock walls. I’ll be honest: before I even tried it, I found the idea of this mechanic unnecessarily tedious and potentially very frustrating. Think QWOP, but much slower and more dependent on careful planning on simpler times. There are finely marked areas on the rock faces that can be used for climbing, but it is the player’s responsibility to move slowly and carefully one step at a time. Still, I certainly wouldn’t call Deliver Us Mars a walking simulator (not that I see anything wrong with walking simulators) because there’s so much more to do along the way. Speaking of Path, the level I played was fairly linear, set right after Cathy’s crash on Mars. There are also plenty of recordings of past events she encounters along the way, providing more context for what appears to be a deep and complex story. I definitely appreciated voice actress Alice Chappelle’s charming delivery (no pun intended), which certainly adds to the emotional impact of the narration. The importance of the story is certainly evident from the beginning of the demo, as Kathy often shares her feelings and thoughts. It’s quite likely that Deliver Us Mars was built with a much higher budget than available to developers. Incidentally, if you’ve played Deliver Us the Moon, the jump in quality is really obvious. The game tells the story of young astronaut Kathy Johansson as she embarks on a mission to Mars to recover stolen ARK colony ships, the last hope for humanity that has been pushed to the brink of extinction. After the success with Deliver Us the Moon, KOKN Interactive is back in space with Deliver Us Mars, of which I played an extensive demo at Gamescom 2022.
